Vatican -. (AGENCIALAVOZ.ORG) The Vatican denied on Sunday that their rules of celibacy for priests is the cause of the sexual abuse scandal that has rocked the church in Europe and again defended his handling of the crisis by the Pope.
Much debate was generated by the statements of one of the closest advisers of the pope, the archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Schoenborn.
Schoenborn asked this week an honest examination of issues such as celibacy and the education of clergy members to discover the origins and roots of abusive priests.
"Part of that is the subject of celibacy besides the issue of character development and part of it is a great deal of honesty in the church, but also in society, "wrote the priest in the online edition of diocesan letter.
The archbishop's office was quick to say they did not call into question Shoenborn celibacy of priests, which was described this week by the Pope as "an expression of the gift of oneself to God and others."
However, Schoenborn has previously been receptive to arguments that celibacy in the priesthood is becoming increasingly problematic for the church, primarily because it limits the number of men seeking to join it.
Last June, Schoenborn presented personally to the Vatican an initiative signed by prominent Australian Catholics who sought to abolish the celibacy rules that would allow married men to become priests.
